The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has given the green light for the first-ever DVB-T2 trial in the USA. A license for a 6-month trial was granted to Baltimore-based WNUV-TV. The trial aims to provide a test bed for a more efficient OFDM based delivery standard, such as DVB-T2, and will have an impact on how digital terrestrial TV will be delivered using current and future standards in the US and beyond. Kabel Deutschland started transmission of the new DVB-C2 standard on cable channel D794 (794 MHz center frequency) at ANGA COM 2013 as part of an extended DVB-C2 field trial in its CATV networks in Berlin Hamburg und Munich. The field trial will migrate into a regular service as soon as relevant availability of DVB-C2 compliant receivers is given for KD cable customers. Read More
From June 18 to 21, DVB will be present at the Broadcast Asia 2013 Conference and Exhibition in Singapore to demonstrate the versatility of its groundbreaking DVB-T2 technology, which is already widely adopted throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Also to be highlighted are some of the latest advancements in Over The Top (OTT) services based on DVB technology. Finally, the official Broadcast Asia conference features a full day session entitled “DVB-T2: Opening Up Your Business For Multiplexing Broadcasting”, which will address the technical, business and regulatory implications for a smooth DVB-T2 implementation. On March 20th there will be a special DVB-S2 session at the Satellite 2013 Conference in Washington D.C. and will include speakers from various DVB experts and DVB Member companies. Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), caused by operational errors at the uplink, has a major impact in the Quality of Service for satellite operators and their customers. However, these days may be numbered now that the DVB Steering Board has approved the new specification for Carrier ID. The specification was ratified at the 73rd Meeting of the DVB Steering Board and will now be submitted to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for formal standardization. Austria's ORS, the transmitter company owned by public broadcaster ORF, will start operating a new DVB-T2 pay-TV service called SimpliTV next month. The new pay-TV serice will be available on subscription only alongside the current free-to-air DVB-T offer from ORF. Compatible DVB-T2 receivers and Irdeto CI+ modules will be availble in the shops from mid-April, and more details will be announced at an ORS press conference around the same time. Read More
