Showcasing market readiness of DVB-I and DVB-NIP at IBC2023

The DVB Project’s booth at IBC2023 (Amsterdam, 15–18 September) will highlight strong progress towards market implementation for its IP-focused specifications for media delivery. The German and Italian DVB-I trials will be showcased alongside advances in interoperability for DVB Native IP delivery. DVB will also celebrate its 30th anniversary with a party on the opening night of the exhibition.

DVB-I showcase

In both Germany and Italy, multi-stakeholder initiatives are progressing towards full market implementation of DVB-I services. Visitors can see both the German DVB-I Pilot (which is to receive IBC’s Special Award for Innovation) and the Italian DVB-I Commercial Trial in action, each with a hybrid service list that seamlessly integrates broadcast and broadband-delivered services. Other features shown will include EPG (electronic programme guide), channel banners, digital rights management, instance prioritization and fallback switching.

Other emerging DVB-I features will be shown via a special IBC2023 service list prepared by DTG Testing, incorporating regionalization, catch-up viewing, box sets and more, also bringing the television experience to smartphones and tablets. Services will include some encoded with the latest DVB video codecs, prepared by Huawei, also showing native DVB-I integration in a set-top box.

A further demonstration will show a proof-of-concept that uses DVB-I to extend the Sat.tv service to smart TVs, enabling easy access to thousands of free-to-air satellite services.

The TV sets for the DVB-I demos are commercially available models with native DVB-I integrations from Vestel.

DVB Native IP

The DVB-NIP specification for native IP broadcasting is also making great strides towards market implementation, with several companies now providing compliant gateways. The DVB booth will feature multiple models from at least three different vendors (EKT, Inverto, Noovo) receiving DVB Native IP satellite signals from Eutelsat and SES.

Multicast packaging (using DVB-MABR), IP encapsulation (DVB-GSE and MPE) and modulation (DVB-S2/S2X) are provided by several partners including Broadpeak, ENENSYS Technologies, Inverto, Quadrille and ST Engineering iDirect.

A range of use cases for serving content to connected devices will be demonstrated, both domestic and professional, the latter including hospitality, transportation, distance education, etc. Delivery of both live and push content will be shown, including with content management and player solutions from EasyBroadcast.

A further demo, in conjunction with ENENSYS Technologies, will show how DVB-NIP can be used to feed 5G base stations, with the content accessed on commercially available smartphones.

Elsewhere at IBC2023

In addition to the demonstrations on the DVB booth, several other companies will be showing solutions based on DVB’s specifications. A growing list is available here.
