DVB chair Remo Vogel highlights role of DVB-I at Beijing innovation forum

DVB chair Remo Vogel was in Beijing, China, last weekend, where he was invited to speak at the ZGC Forum, a major annual conference on innovation in science and technology. His talk, in a session dedicated to the advance of UHD (ultra high definition) television, focused on the role that DVB-I can play in enabling next-generation media delivery and the transition towards IP-based systems.

As explained by Prof. Wen Gao, during his recent DVB World 2025 keynote speech, in China there is a major push behind UHD, which is seen as a key driver for boosting technology development on capture, encoding, transmission and display, with impacts across a range of industries. The Chinese government has developed high-level strategies to accelerate UHD deployment.

In his talk, Remo Vogel called for the adoption of a global solution to enable the transition to next-generation television, explaining how DVB-I offers a universal approach to service and content discovery, regardless of the delivery technology used.

“The transition to UHD, with higher bandwidth requirements, is a challenge that requires both broadcast and IP networks to adapt. DVB-I, with its ability to manage a multiplicity of networks, can be a key enabler for UHD, acting as a common service layer.”

He stressed the fact that no intellectual property rights (IPR) have been declared to ETSI with respect to the technologies used in DVB-I, published by ETSI as TS 103 770.

China has already demonstrated considerable interest in the use of DVB-I, with Prof. Gao floating the possibility of a 2026 trial during his talk in Munich. In May 2023, DVB provided the AVS Workgroup with a licence to translate the DVB-I specification into Chinese.

Meeting the Members

While in Beijing, Remo took the opportunity to meet with representatives of several DVB Members, including Pengcheng Laboratories, NERC-DTV (National Engineering Research Centre for Digital Television) and various consumer electronics manufacturers. He also met with representatives of the AVS Workgroup of China and the UHD World Association.
