DVB-I reference app wins CSI technology award

The reference application for DVB-I developed by Sofia Digital has won the 2020 CSI award for Best Network Delivery Technology. The open-source application was commissioned by the DVB Project as a means of accelerating deployment of the new DVB-I specification. The awards are organized by CSI Magazine, one of the industry’s leading trade publications focused on content delivery.

The selection of Sofia Digital to undertake the DVB-I development work was announced in January this year, with the first version of the app released in April. The reference implementation consists of a back end, allowing the generation and editing of DVB-I service lists, plus front-end clients available both as an HbbTV OpApp and a client for Android devices.

The source code for the implementation is available via GitHub. This has enabled implementers to become familiar with the potential of DVB-I to merge broadcast and IP channels into a seamless experience and provide TV-like navigation to IP-only devices in a standardized way. The reference app has, for example, been used by IRIB R&D to deliver the world’s first live pilot of DVB-I in Tehran. (Read about the pilot in Issue 56 of DVB Scene (PDF).)

Other award winners

The winners of the CSI Awards 2020 were announced in an online ceremony earlier this week. The Best Network Delivery Technology category, where Sofia Digital took the top prize, also featured commendations for Amazon Web Services and DVB Member Broadpeak (which also won a prize in another category).

Other DVB Members that won awards included Synamedia, Rohde & Schwarz, NAGRA, Verimatrix and Globecast (part of the Orange Group).
