World’s first commercial DVB-H service launched

Commercial DVB-H services have now been launched in Italy. Users can subscribe to services from two providers, 3 Italia and Telecom Italia Mobile. The DVB Project Office has learned that the 3 Italia service has been available since the beginning of last week, whilst the TIM service became available yesterday.

These launches coincide with the FIFA World Cup 2006, a factor which is likely to encourage many users to sample the service. Those who wish to do so, however, will be required to obtain a handset equipped with a DVB-H receiver. The receiver that has been made available to subscribers to the 3 Italia service is made by LG – a receiver from Samsung is also to be made available shortly.
