Promoting the benefits of standards-based media delivery at BroadcastAsia and Indonesia workshop

In a busy few weeks, the DVB Project has been actively engaged in Asia, participating in BroadcastAsia 2025 in Singapore and co-organizing a workshop in Indonesia. These initiatives demonstrate DVB’s ongoing commitment to fostering industry collaboration and advancing next-generation television technologies in the region.

DVB at BroadcastAsia

At BroadcastAsia 2025, held at the Singapore Expo from 27 to 29 May, DVB Head of Technology Emily Dubs had the opportunity to meet with more than fifteen DVB Member companies, discussing the growing adoption of DVB’s newest solutions across ASEAN, Latin America, and Africa. She also participated in panels and talks on the future of media delivery, where she emphasized the roles that DVB-I and DVB-NIP (Native IP broadcasting) can play.

A panel discussion organized by the IABM focused on the value of technical standards. Another panel, hosted by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, looked at media delivery futures and featured a lively debate around an all-streaming versus hybrid delivery future. Emily was also invited to speak at the Rohde & Schwarz Tech Talks, where she presented “Five ways 5G can take advantage of DVB standards”.

Workshop in Indonesia

The week after BrodcastAsia, the DVB Project co-organized – with IEEE Broadcast Technology Society – a workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia that featured presentations and demonstrations by several DVB Member companies. Held at the invitation of  ATVSI, the association of commercial television companies in Indonesia, the workshop emphasized the collaborative spirit of DVB, with member companies playing an active role in showcasing new technologies and sharing insights.

Representing Sofia Digital, Mika Kanerva provided an introduction to DVB-I. Paul Higgs (Huawai), who chairs the DVB technical working group on DVB-I, gave an overview of the ecosystem, explaining the the architecture and benefits. For IEEE BTS, Peter Siebert gave a presentation on DVB-I and 5G Broadcast.

DVB-NIP was the other main topic on the agenda. Xavier Battas of Inverto provided an introduction to DVB-NIP. A presentation from Eugene Tan of Broadpeak explained the important role of multicast in IP networks, enabled by the DVB-MABR specification. Richard Smith of EKT examined what DVB-NIP means for broadcasters and operators.

The regulatory perspective came into view in a session that looked specifically at the Indonesian market, moderated by Lily Rustandi of the Indonesia Telematics Society. Andi Zulkifli, representing the ministry for communications and digital, examined regulatory considerations for DVB-I and DVB-NIP and announced a regulatory framework aimed at facilitating testing of such technologies. Representing ATVSI, Rachmat Akbari focused on opportunities for private broadcasters, while former Chair of the DVB Project Peter MacAvock gave a presentation on international standards and regional adoption.

The final sessions looked at the business potential of DVB-NIP and DVB-I. Laurent Roul (ENENSYS) and Richard Smith examined opportunities for content distribution over DVB-NIP, while Xavier Battas focused on the importance of interoperability in the future media landscape. Turning again to DVB-I, Paul Higgs presented on commercial models and monetization strategies, Mika Kanerva on HbbTV as the interactivity solution, and, contributing remotely, DTG‘s Ranjeet Kaur on the topic of compliance testing and harmonized deployment strategies.

Live demonstrations were available from Sofia Digital, ENENSYS/EKT, Inverto, Broadpeak, and Hisilicon/Huawei/Peng Cheng Laboratory/NERC-DTV.
