DVB’s Head of Technology, Emily Dubs, was invited to write the foreword for a recent report from the World Teleport Association that explores the new capabilities and business opportunities enabled by DVB Native IP. She is also contributing to this webinar from the WTA on how DVB-NIP is changing the game for satellite operators. Her fellow panellists are Rami Moussawi (ST Engineering iDirect) and Laurent Leveil (Eutelsat Group).

Background

The past decade has been challenging for satellite-delivered TV, whether direct-to-home or for cable TV systems. Pay-TV households in the US declined 31 percent, from 84 million in 2019 to 58 million by the end of 2023, according to Statista. While the decline has been offset by growth in the Asia-Pacific and EMEA, Ampere Analysis predicts that will change, as the industry experiences the first-ever annual decline in global pay TV penetration. In the face of the numbers, the broadcast ecosystem that serves providers has not been standing still.

One development that may improve the outlook for satellite-delivered TV services is the development of DVB-NIP, or DVB Native IP, a standard for native IP broadcasting. DVB-NIP enables the delivery of over-the-top (OTT) content using broadcast technology, whether satellite or terrestrial. The integration of OTT and broadcast paths into a single IP media distribution solution is designed to provide a platform capable of natively streaming incoming video to all devices on a home or business network while also allowing the creation of additional high-value services, such as ad insertion and content regionalization.

In this webinar, WTA asks broadcast-focused teleport operators and the vendors presenting them with solutions about the new capabilities DVB-NIP can bring, their impact on providers that are already deep into supporting streaming video, and the opportunity to find new growth niches for video over satellite.
