What is the Best UHD for Terrestrial Broadcast?

Abstract
UHD does not only stand for 4k resolution but also for the advanced features HDR, HFR, wider colour gamut and next generation audio (NGA). For broadcasters and network operators introducing UHD services can be an attractive business opportunity. However, 4k resolution requires a significantly higher bandwidth as compared to HD services, which can be a challenge, especially for terrestrial broadcast. A viable option could be to introduce UHD services with HD (1080p) resolution in combination with HDR, wider colour gamut and HFR as well as NGA. Several organisations providing specifications and guidelines for UHD like DVB Project or UHD Forum specify the combination of HD resolution with HDR and wider colour gamut explicitly in their UHD documents. This article will analyse the quality of experience gains of the individual UHD features for the end-user as well as the associated effort for broadcasters and network operators with a special focus on 4k resolution.
