EBU issues new MHP recommendation
In March 2008 the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) withdrew its long-standing recommendation for the use of MHP because of uncertainties about licence fees. Its particular concern related to the requirement for free-to-air (FTA) broadcasters implementing MHP to pay licence fees.
In June 2008 Via Licensing, the company administering the MHP patent pool, announced that fees would not be charged to FTAÂ broadcasters. As a result of this decision, the EBU has this month issued a new recommendation stating that “MHP is considered an appropriate system for interactive television services for new digital broadcasting services by EBU Members“.
The recommendation can be downloaded from the Publications section at http://tech.ebu.ch.
