DVB World returns, with a difference

The DVB World conference, usually held annually, returns next month for the first time since 2019 when it took place in Dublin. This year’s event, in Brussels on Wednesday 18 May, will take a radically different approach: it will be run as an unconference.

The unconference format, which is participant-led, emerged at the end of the 1990s and became popular among developers and the wider tech community in Silicon Valley in the mid-2000s. It puts an emphasis on interaction and collaboration, with participants building the agenda together, based on sessions they themselves propose and pitch at the start of the event.

Time for change

Following two years dominated by webinars and other online formats, the time is right for an event that prioritizes meaningful conversations and real, face-to-face interaction. For the organizers of DVB World 2022, the goal is to create an event that encourages new ideas and alliances to emerge and where participants can find answers and inspiration. For these reasons, the highly flexible and collaborative approach of an unconference was chosen.

Being an unconference, it is impossible to be certain in advance about what topics will be discussed and what outcomes will emerge. It is clear, however, from discussions between the organizers and those planning to participate, that hot topics will include DVB-I (from several angles), native IP broadcasting, next generation video coding, and the overall evolution of media delivery technology and services. Participants are encouraged to think in advance about the topics and sessions they would like to propose at the event. Several participants are planning to present demos during the event and lively and informative discussions are a certainty.

Impressive venue

DVB World 2022 will take place at the Maison de la Poste in Brussels, which offers a range of inviting spaces full of character. Sessions will happen in parallel throughout the day, with participants also free to wander through the adjacent Gare Maritime indoor city, with its breathtaking wooden atrium. (The food market at the Gare Maritime will be the venue for the pre-event icebreaker on Tuesday 17 May.)

In keeping with the community-based spirit of the unconference format, the approach to event sponsorship has also been adjusted for DVB World 2022. Instead of seeking a small number of marquee sponsors, a “supporter” registration option is offered.

The companies shown below have kindly selected the supporter option when registering their participants for DVB World 2022.
