DVB Study Mission reveals game-changing potential of object-based media

The DVB Project has published a report on the potential impact of object-based media (OBM) in the media distribution industry. The report, which emerged from a dedicated Study Mission on the topic and is available as DVB BlueBook S102, examines how OBM can enhance viewer engagement by offering more dynamic and personalized media experiences.

Object-based media (OBM) is an innovative approach to creating, distributing, and consuming media content by utilizing separate media components known as ‘objects’. These objects consist of media essence, such as audio, video, or graphics, paired with metadata that describes how they interact and can be assembled. More personalized viewing experiences are made possible by enabling users to dynamically select or automatically customize their media content based on preferences, device characteristics, or viewing environments, fundamentally changing how media is tailored to audience needs.

Led by Elfed Howells (representing Huawei), the DVB Study Mission explored how DVB systems can integrate OBM, taking into account current technological capabilities and viewer demands. The report evaluates existing DVB specifications that could support OBM and identifies opportunities for new standards to enhance media delivery.

New possibilities for broadcasters

The report’s findings suggest that by effectively harnessing OBM, broadcasters can offer improved accessibility and interactivity, aligning with evolving viewer expectations. The development of open specifications in this area could facilitate a more interactive and tailored viewing experience across various media platforms.

As outlined in the report’s concluding remarks, DVB plans to continue engaging with stakeholders to assess the need for standardization in OBM, ensuring that these potential advancements are effectively integrated into future broadcasting initiatives.
