DVB highlights next-gen media delivery solutions at ABU DBS 2025
DVB has once again been a key contributor at the ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium 2025, running in Kuala Lumpur throughout the week. Through a keynote talk from DVB’s Head of Technology and a workshop featuring DVB Members, the focus has been on DVB’s innovative specs for next-generation media delivery.
Hands-on workshop
Titled “The Pillars of Next-Gen Media Delivery: DVB Native IP, DVB-I & Targeted Advertising“, the DVB workshop on Wednesday 26 February combined live demonstrations with expert insights, offering a hands-on experience with real-world applications of DVB technologies.
Emily Dubs, Head of Technology for the DVB Project, opened the workshop with a brief overview of how DVB supports migration to new networks as they become relevant, allowing broadcasters to reach full population coverage with safe and accessible media experiences. She also updated attendees on progress towards DVB-I deployment in various markets around the world. (Download slides)

Richard Smith (above) of EKT focused on DVB Native IP. He explained how the new specification makes it possible to provide unicast streams over a satellite multicast network, thus making that content available over Wi-Fi in the home or in public venues. With this ability to reach all connected screens, he said, DVB-NIP represents the biggest opportunity in satellite since its inception. (Download slides)

Mika Kanerva (above) of Sofia Digital was also on hand, to explain how DVB-I and DVB Targeted Advertising are offering attractive new options for broadcasters. As demonstrated at the workshop, DVB-I makes it possible to offer a unified service list across different devices, for example on both TV sets and smartphones. The integration of targeted advertising provides new monetization options. (Download slides)
Participants had the opportunity to engage with the experts, explore practical use cases, and thus gain a deeper understanding of DVB’s solutions for future-ready broadcasting.
Conference presentation
In addition to the workshop, Emily Dubs (below) presented at the ABU DBS conference on Tuesday, 25 February, during Session 2 on Next-Gen Media Distribution. Her talk, “How DVB Bridges Broadcast and Broadband for Standards-Based Next-Gen Media Distribution“, outlined how DVB’s IP-based standards provide a seamless, future-proof approach to content delivery across both broadcast and broadband networks.

The ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium remains a important platform for DVB to engage with broadcasters, regulators, and technology providers across the Asia-Pacific region.
