Demoing DASH and OpApp at TV Connect

DVB will have a strong presence at this year’s TV Connect exhibition and conference, taking place at London’s Olympia on 9-10 May. With demos of some of the latest hybrid and broadband delivery technology plus two contributions to the conference programme, delegates will have a golden opportunity to catch up with the latest DVB developments in content delivery.

A duo of demos

DVB’s exhibition booth – E40 – will host two great demos based on open standards. The first will show the use of the DVB-DASH specification for the delivery of UHD content over adaptive streaming. The latest version of DVB-DASH was recently published by ETSI  and now includes HDTV, UHD, high dynamic range (HDR), high frame rate (HFR) and next generation audio (NGA). The demo at TV Connect is provided in collaboration with IRT, using HDR content from ARTE (featuring the Hybrid Log Gamma variant of HDR).

The second demo comes courtesy of HbbTV and Dutch research organization TNO, with support from DVB and LG. It is one of the first implementations of the HbbTV Operator Application specification, which allows TV service providers, in partnership with TV manufacturers, to provide an operator-branded experience as an application on television sets. It can function as a “virtual set-top box”, offering all the functionality of an STB inside the TV itself.

Conference contributions

In addition to the two demos, DVB also features in the conference programme at TV Connect 2018. DVB’s ongoing work on a solution for targeted advertising in the broadcast domain will be presented by Angelo Pettazzi (R.T.I. / Mediaset Group). As co-chair of the DVB Commercial Module group on Targeted Advertising he is well placed to provide an update on the group’s progress towards defining the commercial requirements for such a specification.

Peter Siebert, DVB Head of Technology, will also speak at the conference, exploring the topic of “OTT in a linear world”. He will explain why reports of the death of TV are greatly exaggerated – both the TV set and broadcast delivery remain important in our modern media world. Peter Siebert’s talk is on Thursday morning, while Angelo Pettazzi will speak on Wednesday afternoon.

DVB Members are encouraged to visit the DVB booth, where you can meet with representatives of DVB, HbbTV and TNO.
