A workshop at next month’s EBU HORIZONS 2025 conference (6–7 May, Geneva) provides a golden opportunity to learn how to deploy a DVB-I platform. The DIY DVB-I Workshop takes place on the second day of the event and will offer both insights from some of the ongoing trials in Europe and hands-on guidance from pioneers in the field.
Programme highlights
The session will open with perspectives from three on-going DVB-I projects involving public service broadcasters in Europe.
- Christian Klöckner (WDR / co-chair of EBU TV Platforms group) will provide an update on the German national DVB-I pilot.
- Jim Higgins (Saorview/RTÉ) will introduce the DVB-I proof of concept in Ireland, sharing some early lessons on technical integration.
- Francesc Mas (3CAT) will present the plans for the recently announced DVB-I pilot in Spain, involving cooperation between national and regional broadcasters.
Perhaps even more interesting for those looking to launch their own platform, the “DIY” part of the session offers three presentations providing practical guidance on key aspects of deploying DVB-I.
- Gordon Maynard (OnScreen Publishing) will walk participants through setting up a DVB-I service list, demystifying the technical components and tools needed to get started.
- Rainer Biehn (bmt) will explain how to establish an aggregated national DVB-I registry, an important element of the pilot in Germany.
- William Cooper (Service List Registry) will explain how an open API for DVB-I can ease the adoption of the specification.
The entire session will be moderated by Bram Tullemans, who coordinates the EBU TV Platforms group. The workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore DVB-I from concept to deployment, with real-world case studies and expert guidance.
Elsewhere at HORIZONS
Beyond the DVB-I workshop, the programme for HORIZONS 2025 offers a wide range of sessions that will be of interest to anyone working in media distribution and platforms. The opening day will include keynotes on the distribution strategies of Sky and Swedish Radio as well as one on ARD’s approach to digital-first content. Other topics on the agenda that day include prominence and findability – in a talk by DVB chair Remo Vogel – technology innovations for distribution, and the role that satellite and hybrid networks can play in securing resilient media distribution infrastructure.
The parallel tracks on the day two, in addition to featuring the DVB-I workshop, will cover themes like spectrum, 5G Broadcast, CDN development, HbbTV and more. Technical deep-dives are balanced with policy and regulatory discussions, giving a comprehensive view of the evolving media distribution ecosystem. The event also features live hands-on demos, networking opportunities, and a social gathering in a boat on the nearby Lake Geneva.
The event takes place at EBU headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Click for more information and to register for HORIZONS 2025.
