Kickstarting deeper collaboration on open-source tools for media applications

Five organizations that develop and promote open standards for media distribution came together this week for an online workshop aiming to kickstart deeper collaboration. The OSMART workshop – standing for Open-Source Media Application Reference Tools – was organized by the DVB Project and 5G-MAG in cooperation with the DASH Industry Forum, the HbbTV Association and the CTA WAVE project.

The workshop, which was attended by over 100 participants around the world, opened with six short presentations on relevant projects involving one or more of the participating organizations. The presentations were followed by an open discussion on possible technical synergies and opportunities for collaboration. The slides that were presented are available here, along with an overview of the discussions that followed.

The participating organizations agreed that it had been a valuable exercise and that they would welcome further activities under the OSMART banner. It provided an opportunity to better understand what each organization is doing in terms of software. It was particularly useful to clarify who is doing what in the overall distribution chain, with a distinction to be drawn between test materials, conformance frameworks and reference implementations.

Based on these initial presentations, a future event could usefully identify opportunities to collaborate on development and to facilitate interoperability through building applications, use cases and demonstrations.

The projects covered by this initial OSMART workshop were as follows:
