DVB World 2009 opens in Berlin

The annual conference and exhibition of the DVB Project, DVB World 2009, takes place at the Berliner Congress Center in Berlin this week. The event brings together more than 200 delegates from around the world to hear the latest updates on commercial and technical aspects of digital broadcasting. The conference will be opened by the chairman of DVB’s Promotions and Communications Module, Helmut Stein. DVB chairman Phil Laven will then introduce this year’s keynote speaker, Gordon G. Graylish of Intel Corporation. The keynote presentation, titled Consumer Electronics 3.0, will examine the role that the Internet can play in bringing the TV experience to the next level. The keynote session will be followed by a series of flagship presentations intended to set the tone for the rest of the conference.
Tuesday morning will open with the Broadband TV session, chaired by Peter Barnett of Tandberg Television. This session will explore a broad spectrum of technical and commercial issues related to IPTV, Internet TV and hybrid broadcast/broadband solutions. It will be followed in the afternoon by the Cable session, during which the implications of the forthcoming DVB-C2 standard will be discussed. the Cable session will be chaired by the new Director of the DVB Project Office, Peter Siebert. Tuesday’s programme will be rounded off with a panel discussion, moderated by Phil Laven and featuring representatives of the Consumer Electronics manufacturers, covering some of the challenges they face as the transition to digital TV continues and as HD services are rolled out.
Wednesday morning’s session, chaired by DVB Technical Module chairman Ulrich Reimers, focuses on all things Terrestrial. Updates from the rollout of HD services using DVB-T2 in the UK will be contrasted with the French approach to the introduction of HDTV on DVB-T. The subject of launching successful mobile TV services will also be tackled.
