Mediaset likes MHP
Angelo Pettazzi, Head of DTT Content Factory at Mediaset told the Future TV Advertising Forum audience last month that “MHP is a fantastic tool and absolutely, you can match the experience from a company like Yahoo!”.
Italian broadcasters have thrown their weight behind the DGTVi initiative that has created the ‘Gold Label’ certification programme for HBB receivers based on MHP. This is not only aimed at the set-top box market but integrated digital TVs (iDTV), which means Gold Label connected TVs will play an important role in the Italian market. Mediaset points out that Samsung, LG, Philips and Vestel have all agreed to implement Gold Label features for all their 2011 iDTV products that feature an Ethernet connection. Panasonic and Sony have committed to at least half of their 2011 iDTV line-up with Ethernet connections having the ‘Gold Label’.
Pettazzi has been arguing the case for MHP as an open and interoperable standard for HBB, amidst concerns that the proliferation of proprietary connected TV solutions is forcing content providers to build the same application multiple times to suit different platforms. He agreed with an audience member that the fragmentation of HBB between different platforms in Europe is creating a “mess”. However, he pointed out that every country has different requirements.
