Universal Conditional Access Module for DTT, Pay-TV

Hardware manufacturers and Italian broadcasters have reached agreement on a Conditional Access Module (CAM), which provides support for multiple suppliers.
The card called SmarCAM Italia is plugged directly into the digital TV using the industry standard DVB-CI interface. The card can support up to two smart cards simultaneous and makes it no longer necessary for cards to be exchanged to watch content from different Pay-TV providers on the DTT platform.
The card is the result of two years work between SmarDTV, part of the Kudelski group, TV manufacturers and Italian broadcasters Mediaset, Telecom Italia Media, Pangea and the DGTVi committee, which represents all TV broadcasters in Italy.
As well as hardware, implementation guidelines, an interoperability partner programme and a broadcaster certification process have been agreed.
