Switch to digital TV in 2011

Rwanda will switch to digital broadcasting early in 2011 according to reports in the EastAfrican Weekly
The government has provided over USD 40 million (€29.5 million) to the state-owned broadcaster Rwanda Television (TVR) for the necessary infrastructure to complete the switch to DTT ahead of the 2012 East African deadline. According to the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority which is spearheading the transition process, TVR is in the process of piloting digital signals transmission. The Rwanda Information Office has hired Harris Corporation to upgrade the system from analogue to digital and install new antennas. Jean Baptiste Mutabazi, the executive assistant to the director-general of the authority, said the process should be complete by the end of March. At least 10 transmitters have been imported to increase countrywide coverage from the current 60 percent to 75-80 percent. Currently Rwanda has one free-to-air television broadcaster, owned by the Rwanda Information Office.
