DVB-T2 pilot in Barcelona

Abertis Telecom has begun testing DVB-T2 broadcasting in the area of Barcelona for a period of six months.
The tests are part of the European project ENGINES (Enabling Next Generation for Broadcast Services), developed under the initiative Celtic Plus, part of Eureka, a pan-European project created in 1985.
The pilot will assess the performance of the new standard in terms of the overlap of two transmitters using the different variants of the system in real live conditions.
Two transmitters have been installed in the Abertis Telecom Tower (Torre Collserola in Barcelona) for the tests and a third transmitter at the corporate headquarters of the operator in Parc Logístic.
The main area of research is the transmission of services for fixed and mobile reception (tablets, smartphones, laptops), on the same DVB-T2 multiplex at the same time.
Also, the pilot will look into creating single frequency networks of wide geographical coverage, with high protection from interference.
An evaluation of the standard for mobile service known as DVB-T2 Lite will in also be carried out. One of its uses could be for the reception of services in high-speed trains.
