Spain achieves analogue switch off
On the 2nd April 2010, Spain officially completed the transition to digital terrestrial broadcasting with the switch of off all remaining analogue transmissions. This means that the country’s 46 million inhabitants can only receive digital terrestrial TV services from now on.
According to the Association of Electronic and Telecommunications Industry (ASIMELEC) the DTT process “has been a success”. The association’s latest figures for DTT signal coverage stand at 98.13% of the population, and as at February 83.6% of the country’s homes were already connected to the new television signals.
Some small areas of the regions of Asturias, Castilla y León, Galicia and the Canary Islands are still without adequate coverage due to their difficult landscape.
There are eight public and 24 private channels on a national level.
