Mediaset ready to exploit MHP-based Connected TV

Italian broadcast group Mediaset, which offers free and paid services over digital terrestrial, views Connected TV as an important opportunity to expand the reach of its content, expand its catch-up TV service from the PC to televisions and potentially boost its advertising business when enough connected devices have penetrated the market. The company is hopeful that the uptake of HD DTT set-top boxes, enabled for hybrid broadcast/broadband services, will kick start the connected market in Italy.

According to Angelo Pettazzi, Head of DTT Content Factory at Mediaset, the choice of DVB-MHP as the middleware for DTT means there is no requirement for new standardisation efforts in the country to enable hybrid services. He is convinced MHP is the right solution to exploit the Connected TV opportunity across multiple devices, including television sets, and expects to see MHP-based connected iDTVs (integrated dhttp://v-net.tv/files/mediaset-main.jpgigital TV sets) start making a big impact in 2011.

âWe do not need standards like HbbTV or Canvas,â he told Videonet recently. âThese are similar to what we have right now with MHP. They could happen but it will take time to deliver stable devices.â
