Tender for DVB-T2 in Germany

The fourteen German media authorities in charge of licensing, control and promotion of commercial broadcasting have put the contract to operate a national DVB-T2/HEVC platform out to tender, according to their supervisory commission, ZAK. This will provide digital terrestrial television in High Definition (HD). The tender period runs until the end of January 2015 and the contract should be awarded in March.

The aim is to start switching to the new technology in summer 2016, starting with conurbations. The process should be completed when ARD and ZDF migrate to the new platform in 2018. Currently, about 10 percent of German households use aerials to receive TV and the aim is to improve their service. The migration will also free up spectrum for mobile broadband services.
