IRT to lead IP delivery masterclass at DVB World 2018
The pre-conference masterclass at DVB World 2018 (12-14 March, Warsaw) will focus on internet delivery of content in a multi-device world. This in-depth session will be led by Martin Schmalohr, a researcher with the world-renowned Institut für Rundfunktechnik in Munich.
Multi-device delivery
Media organisations are today expected to make their content available to users on a multiplicity of platforms and devices. It isn’t easy to find the right combination of container formats, transport protocols and coding schemes to ensure interoperability and maintain an appropriate quality level. This masterclass will cover the essentials, including hands-on demonstrations.
The masterclass will be broken into three sections, the first dealing with video codecs and multimedia transport, taking as an example the encoding profiles and workflows of Germany’s ARD. The second section will look in detail at MPEG-DASH, including its combination with HLS in CMAF, the Common Media Application Format. The final section will examine specific constraints for HbbTV and delivery to PCs, including the use of DASH for live events and the delivery of subtitles.
Masterclass leader
In addition to his contributions to international standardisation efforts, IRT’s Martin Schmalohr – who will lead the masterclass – provides support to the public broadcasters ARD and ZDF for online distribution to PC, HbbTV and mobile devices over the open internet. His focus is interoperability and the perceptual quality of audio and video encoding as well as quality of experience in Adaptive Streaming systems for HbbTV, PC and mobile devices.
