DVB-I and Native IP to the fore at DEMOS 2021


Last week’s second edition of the online DVB DEMOS event provided ample evidence that DVB’s new IP-centric solutions are well placed to drive the future of media delivery.

Fifteen DVB Member companies showcased their latest products and services based on new or forthcoming DVB specifications, including several multi-vendor demos. DVB-I was at the heart of more than half of the demos, while the event also included the first examples of the DVB-NIP (Native IP) specification, which is on track for finalization before the end of the year.

Demos from TPV Technology, Kineton, Dolby and Huawei showed how DVB-I can be used to address the full range of device types and viewing contexts with enhanced features and services; Qualcomm provided a first glimpse of DVB-I over LTE-based 5G Terrestrial Broadcast; and DVB-I also provided the service layer for the universal service delivery demo from the NESTED consortium (which includes ATEME, ENENSYS Technologies, Orange and Viaccess-Orca).

Another multi-vendor demo, from Broadpeak, ST Engineering iDirect, EKT and EasyBroadcast, showed how DVB-NIP will enable the B2C delivery of live OTT video content over satellite. Native IP was also the focus of the demo from ENENSYS Technologies, showing OTT delivery over both satellite and terrestrial networks.

The need for interoperability was another strong message delivered during the event, with demos from both Eurofins Digital Testing (showing test suites for DVB Targeted Advertising and CI Plus 2.0) and DTG Testing (unveiling the DVB-I test suite).

Wrapping up the event, DVB Head of Technology Emily Dubs explained how the different internet-centric solutions from DVB that were showcased by the exhibitors fit together. She stressed the central role of DVB-I “as a common service layer that allows any type of service to reach any type of device, regardless of the network.”
