What is the DVB Project?

The Digital Video Broadcasting Project (DVB) is an industry-led consortium of around 250 broadcasters, manufacturers, network operators, software developers, regulatory bodies and others in over 35 countries committed to designing open technical standards for the global delivery of digital television and data services. Services using DVB standards are available on every continent with more than 500 million DVB receivers deployed.

New DVB Sub-Brand Logos New DVB Sub-Brand Logos (August 31st)

Over the years, the DVB family of open standards has grown, giving rise to specific logos relating to each standard. Today DVB launches 48 completely redesigned DVB sub-brand logos to give the DVB sub-brand logos a stronger and more uniform look. Starting September 1st 2010, and for the first time, the DVB Project is enabling the authorized use of its family of sub-brand logos, which can be used to specifically identify the DVB standard to which a product or service relates.

DVB @ IBC 2010 DVB @ IBC 2010 (August 30th)

To celebrate the completion and implementation, of all three of the main second-generation DVB standards, the DVB Project will show live demos of DVB-S2, DVB-T2 and DVB-C2 side- by-side for the first time. Furthermore, we will be using 3D content to demonstrate the transmission capabilities of the second generation and to underline the strong role of DVB in 3D TV standardization. A live DVB-T2 transmission will be broadcast from the Amsterdam TV tower and can be received across the IBC halls. The transmission will consist of 3D and HD content. To receive the signal you just have to install a DVB-T2 TV or set-top box on your stand. Further technical details will be posted on our website soon.

DVB-T2 Tender in India DVB-T2 Tender in India (August 26th)

Prasar Bharati, the Broadcasting Corporation of India, plans to introduce DVB-T2 services at 19 Locations in India and has published a formal tender notice. There are plans for DVB-T2 HD and SD services at 19 locations, and the cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata will also have one HD-only service. This tender notice and the growing interest for DVB-T2 in the region reconfirm India's 1999 decision to adopt DVB-T as its national Digital Terrestrial Television system, and could potentially create even bigger economies of scale for low DVB-T and DVB-T2 set-top box prices.

DVB World 2011 - Nice, France DVB World 2011 - Nice, France (August 5th)

DVB World 2011 will take place from March 7th to March 9th in Nice, France. The conference, exhibition and lunch will all take place in one single convenient location: the Hotel Le Méridien, right on the famous Promenade des Anglais boulevard in Nice. The conference programme and information about how to register and book accommodation will be posted on the DVB World website and through the DVB World mailing list over the coming months. 3D-TV Commercial Requirements Approved 3D-TV Commercial Requirements Approved (July 13th)

One of the hottest subjects in media today is 3D-TV, and a number of Pay-TV services and trials services are already available. 3D displays are available acrross the world. The DVB project has taken an important step with agreements on commercial requirements for 3D-TV. The requirements include the formats that should be catered for, and take the new area of 3D subtitles into account.

DVB-T2 PLP Plugfest DVB-T2 PLP Plugfest (June 30th)

On June 22nd to 24th Media Broadcast and the DVB Project held a DVB-T2 Plugfest in Berlin to test the M-PLP (Multiple Physical Layer Pipes) technology that is a relevant part of the DVB-T2 standard. This test successfully demonstrated how the PLP technology allows the combining of services with different transmission requirements. For example, HDTV to roof top antennas or Standard Definition TV (SDTV) to receivers with indoor antennas within the same channel.

IBC 2010 Innovation Award IBC 2010 Innovation Award (June 29th)

More good news for DVB-T2! BBC R&D and the DVB Project have been shortlisted for the IBC 2010 Innovation Award in the Content Delivery category. The IBC Innovation Awards are unique in celebrating not just the technology but the collaboration between suppliers and end user to create commercially successful and creatively empowering solutions. The DVB-T2 study group was led by BBC R&D but involved 70 individuals representing 40 companies from around the world. The winner will be announced at the IBC Awards Ceremony on Sunday 12 September.
