Uruguay adopts DVB-T and DVB-H
A decree formally announcing the adoption by Uruguay of both DVB-T and DVB-H for the implementation of Terrestrial Digital television, was signed on the 27th August by President Tabaré Vázquez and Minister for Industry Jorge Lepra.
The decision comes after one year’s analysis, by a specialist commission, into the practical and economic benefits of each of the three competing systems, DVB-T, ATSC and ISDB-T.
The special commission was made up by the Undersecretary for Industry and Energy, Martin Ponce, the President of Anatel, Maria Simon, the President of Ursec, León Lev, the Director of Communication of the Presidency Gerardo Bleier and the Director of National TV, Sonia Breccia.
Following the decision both Ursec and the Ministry of Industry will draw up plans defining how and when the transition to digital transmission can take place.
León Lev said that putting the new digital system in to practice would occur in the next administration and that the government wants “to open the field to more options” and “to democratise mass media”.
