Qtel to launch DVB-H service in 2007
Qatar's Qtel will commercially offer Digital Video
Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H) in Qatar this year following successful trials
since December.
Qtel’s Executive Director (Wireless) Sheikh Fahad Jassim al-Thani is reported
to have said that the service provider was in talks with vendors to build a commercial
platform for DVB-H.
"We are ready to go commercial. But the only bottleneck is the lack of
adequate DVB-enabled handsets.
Sheikh Fahad said television programmes from some 13 popular broadcasters
including Aljazeera, CNN, Cartoon Network, and QTV were being beamed across
Qtel's DVB-H network.

Qtel promotes DVB-H service
Qtel has announced a free raffle draw through which six visitors to the 15th Asian Games venue will be picked to win the latest DVB-H enabled mobile handset and four visitors a 3G handset.
A spokesman said “ We are happy that the lucky winners of the high-tech DVB-H enabled Samsung handsets, a technology which Qtel was the first one to introduce in the Middle East last month, will get a chance to enjoy the exceptional high quality of images and enjoy watching the Games on their brand new mobile”

DVB-H available in Qatar for the Asian Games
Qatar is to be the first country in the entire Middle East region to provide digital video broadcasting to handheld mobile terminals according to Qtel CEO Dr Nasser Marafin.
Qtel has already built the network to deliver TV to mobiles via DVB-H and the service is to be available on a trial basis during the 15th Asian Games in Doha.
The service will be operational between the 1st and 15th of December and available to a select group of customers. It is expected that a total of 1,380 DVB-H enabled handsets will in use during the games.
A commercial DVB-H service is planned to become operational in Qatar during the first quarter of 2007.
