Peru postpones decision on DTT system
The Ministry of Transportation and Communications has postponed a decision on the choice of a DTT system for Peru, for 90 days from October 2008. This means that a decision will not be made until 2009.
The delay was requested by the Chinese and Brazilian embassies so as to allow the testing of the Chinese system DMB-T and the Japanese ISDB-T system complete with the enhancements requested by Brazil.
Peru has recently been conducting DTT tests using ATSC, DVB-T and ISDB-T in the Arequipa and Cusco provinces and the same test conditions will be used for DMB-T and enhanced ISDB-T.
DTT is planned to start in 2009 with a complete analogue service switch off during the next 15 years.

Peru begins testing DTT standards
DTT tests are starting in Peru this week according to reports on Andina, the country’s official government website. The article reports that tests using both broadcast and cellular technology using DVB-T/H, ATSC and ISDB-T will take place in the city of Iquitos.
The Vice- Minister of Communications, Cayetana Aljovín, said DTV trials of the chosen system are expected to begin in 2009, but that analogue TV would not be switched of until DTV is fully established, which is likely take 10-15 years.

Launch of a DVB-H trial
ATV, subsidiary of the media group Albavision has launched a DVB-H trial in Lima, Peru. Viewers are able to access four television programme services.
Depending on the results of the trial, commercial DVB-H services could be launched in June 2008.
At the end January, Antel launched a DVB-H trial in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

Digital Terrestrial TV report completed
A report detailing the results of technical performance test in Peru on the three DTT systems has been completed and given to the Ministry of Transport and communications (MTC) for consideration.
The report compiled by a team of technicians from Peru’s UPC University provides detailed results of field trails and tests done on the three systems, DVB-T, ATSC and ISDB-T since the beginning of December.
Veronica Zavala, Minister for Transportation and Communications now has the task of deciding which system should be used in Peru.
UPC University began field tests on the three systems on the 3rd of December 2007, using a 1.8 kW Channel 29 transmitter and a 16-bay antenna with a gain of approximately 17 dB. The transmitter was operated at a reduced output power of 1 kW, which provided an effective radiated power of approximately 50 kW. The transmission facility, which was provided by TV station Andina de Radiodifusion, allowed instantaneous switching between the three DTV systems.
It was also reported that Frecuencia Latina (Channel 2) and ATV (channel 9) are already doing tests with European and U.S. digital standards.

Lima DTV tests continue
The Ministry of Transport and Communication in Peru is continuing to progress the testing of the three major DTV systems DVB-T, ISDB-T and ATSC.
Transmissions are being provided by the TV station Andina de Radiodifusion (ATV) using a 1.8kW transmitter on channel 29, feeding a 16 bay antenna with a gain of approximately 17dB. The transmitter is set up to provide 1kW output and switching allows exciters for each of the three systems to be selected almost instantaneously.
In unrelated tests ATV plans to evaluate the DVB-H system, which is specifically designed to provide mobile TV signal to handheld devices such as mobile phones.
The tests are expected to use a 300W transmitter, feeding a more directional 6 bay antenna to cover a part of the city of Lima.

DTT Field Tests begin in Peru
Field tests for the implementation of digital terrestrial television in Peru began on the 3rd of December, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Transport and Communication (MTC).
Companies representing the three main international standards, DVB-T, ISDB-T and ATSC have been setting up transmission equipments so that the analysis can take place, using a protocol devised by the Multisectoral Commision, which will also recommend the standard to be adopted by Peru.
Field tests will be used to evaluate TV reception in houses and TV reception when mobile.
The Multisectoral Commission was established on February 21st, 2007, with the aim of suggesting the best standard for digital television broadcasting in Peru. It is presided over by representatives of Peru’s MTC.

DVB-T trial launched in Peru
During the 25th anniversary celebrations for TV channel Frecuencia Latina Canal 2, a new digital production centre and digital outside broadcast units were inaugurated.
At the ceremony the launch of a DVB-T trial in Lima Peru was also announced.
The ceremony was presided over by the President of Peru Alan Garcia who was accompanied by the president of the Congress, Luis Gonzáles Posada, the Minister of Transport and Communications, Verónica Zavala and the Vice Minister of Communications, Cayetana Aljovín.
