DVB-H services to launch in 2008
Nokia Siemens Networks, together
with Global Mediacom, today announced a joint collaboration to launch a
commercial broadcast mobile TV service, based on Digital Video
Broadcast-Handheld (DVB-H) technology, in Indonesia in the first half of 2008.
The service will start first in the Jabodetabek area.
Nokia Siemens Networks
Indonesia is responsible for the end-to-end systems and services, which will
include consulting, implementation of the entire broadcasting solution and
network, systems integration and the relevant business applications. Global
Mediacom is also in discussions with Nokia for Nokia to provide DVB-H
integrated devices such as the Nokia N77, and work with Nokia Siemens Networks
on joint marketing activities to ensure service adoption by Indonesian
consumers.
Global Mediacom is an integrated telecommunications and broadcasting group
operating in Indonesia.

DVB-T Endorsed as ASEAN DTT standard
Ministers endorsed DVB-T as the standard for the ASEAN member nations at the
Ninth Conference of the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) held
in Jakarta Indonesia during May 2007.
ASEAN representatives from member countries, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia,
Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and
Vietnam were all present at the conference to share the endorsement.
According to the joint media statement “ The Ministers noted that the DVB-T
standard was the most commonly adopted international DTV standard and would
offer the most advantages in terms of economies of scale, ease of adoption and
versatility for multiple platforms”.
The common standard is expected to make equipment, such as set-top-boxes and
DTV receivers more affordable throughout the region. The analogue switch off
date is likely to be 2015.

Indonesia likely to adopt DVB-T standard
According to Alexander Rusli, an advisor to the communications minister, the
DVB-T standard should be selected in Indonesia. The technology is also expected
to be relatively inexpensive to deploy given its widespread adoption in many
other markets. Digital Terrestrial television services are expected to begin in
2009 with analogue switch off in 10 years time. The Japanese ISDB system, the
Chinese DMB system and the American ATSC systems have all been considered during
the previous study and trial programme.

Indonesia’s broadcast goes digital
According to Communications Minister Sofyan Djalil, Indonesia will definitely migrate to digital. He was speaking at the International Broadcast & Multimedia Expo (IBEX) 2006 held in Bali and went on to say that trials of digital radio and TV broadcasting are already taking place.
Speaking later in the conference Lily Rustandi, a member of the national digital team revealed more details of digital operation in Indonesia and said that “All TV broadcasting stations send their signals to respective relay stations in the region via satellite using DVB-S and in addition some cable and satellite stations have already adopted DVB-S and DVB-C”.
She went on to say that the team is already conducting digital TV trials using the Chinese DMB-T system as well as DVB-T and DVB-based IP services in Jakarta.
The DVB-T trial, being held jointly by TVRI and RCTI, has been in progress since July and is set to end in December 2006. A DVB-H trial is also underway in the country.
