DTT options for Albania
Zimo Krutaj of the National Council for radio and TV said at a recent conference that the Albanian public broadcaster RTVSH could end up with two DTT multiplexes each carrying 20 channels.
Each multiplex would uses MPEG-4, H.264 AVC compression and have the option to operate two national channels, eight free to air thematic channels, 11 regional services and six pay per view channels.
Since July 2004, pay-DTT services have been available from DigitAlb which offers up to 35 pay television services across four multiplexes and claims over 100,000 subscribers.

DigitalALB TV parameters

In Albania, DigitalALB currently operates four multiplexes on UHF channels 62, 64, 67 and 69. All services are broadcast using the 8k mode, in an 8MHz channel, with 64QAM, a guard interval of 1/8 and a code rate of 5/6. SFN’s are also used to broadcast the services.

Albania to prepare a framework for Digital TV services

The Albanian National Council of Radio and Television (NCRT) is preparing to draft a strategy for the audiovisual sector, focusing on regulatory issues.
The strategy will cover the following: the management of the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting; the establishment of a digital regulatory framework; improving analogue broadcasting regulations; and the enforcement of copyright and broadcasting rights.
The NCRT will be assisted in the production of this strategy by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

DVB-H service launched in Albania
DigitALB and Grass Valley launched DVB-H services for Tirana and the surrounding area, on the 20th December 2006.
By the 23rd of January 07 the coverage is expected to be 50% of Albania and will be extended to 80% during the second phase of the project.
During 2007 the service will be Free-to-air and the DigitALB platform will have 14 to 16 channels available to view by those with DVB-H enabled phones.

Digital success in Albania
Albanian digital pay-TV provider DigitAlb has announced that it has reached 100,000 subscribers according to Broadband TV News.
Launched in July 2003, it is the countries only Digital Terrestrial Platform and also operates a digital satellite service.
The satellite platform has been selling large numbers of subscriptions in the EU, where there are many Albanian migrants.
DigitAlb only has a temporary DTT broadcast licence at present and is lobbying parliament to approve a regulation draft law on DTT.
