Boxer launches in Denmark
Boxer who won the right to operate the countries DTT platform in 2008 have begun broadcasting.
Boxer Denmark launched its services on the 1st February 2009 in Jutland to cover the west of Denmark and will be expanding its network nationwide during 2009.
Boxers Pay TV services are compressed using MPEG-4 whilst the public channels DR1, DR2 and TV2 still use MPEG-2. Set top boxes must be capable of decoding both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 until 2012 when all services are to be switched to MPEG-4.

Boxer wins in Denmark
Swedish DTT platform operator Boxer has won the right to operate the DTT platform in Denmark.
The media authority, Mediesekretariatet, has announced that Boxer will run the three multiplex services, which are to launch in November 2009 after switchover.
Boxer won out over bids from the Norwegian Telenor and the Swedish Modern Times Group.

Digital Services in Denmark
Plans are well underway to provide viewers in Denmark with new television services on the DTT platform, says Digitag in a recent comprehensive web letter on the Digital TV situation in the country.
Cable is the leading television platform at the moment with a penetration of over 60% of TV households. Currently 18% rely on the terrestrial platform for primary TV viewing but its actual use is much higher because satellite delivery, which is extensively used, does not provide access to local and regional services.
At present only limited DTT services are available but even with this early limitation, 500,000 DTT receivers have been sold which translates to a penetration of 21%.
The first DTT multiplex was launched in April 2006 using MPEG-2 and this will be joined by a second on the 1st November 2009 and it will use MPEG-4 AVC compression.
Four multiplexes will eventually be in operation, three by the 1st November 2009 and the fourth on the 1st November 2010 after analogue switch off has been completed in neighbouring countries.
The Radio and television board has called for all four multiplexes to eventually use MPEG-4 AVC compression and multiplex 1 must change to MPEG-4 by 2012.
Analogue switch off will take place on the 31st October 2009.

Three applicants for Pay-TV licences
The Mediesekretariatet has received 3 applications to operate Pay-TV services on the Danish DTT network. The applicants are Boxer, (the Swedish Pay-TV operator), Telenor’s Danmarks digital TV and modern Times Group’s Danmarks TV. The digital licences will cover the operation of mobile TV and DTT on four multiplexes, the first three of which should become available after analogue switch off on the 1st November 2009 with the forth following a year later.
The suitability to tender for the three companies will be announced on the 12th February 2008 with a final decision expected on the 28th March 2008.

Four DTT multiplexes to be available by the 31st October 2009
Digitag reports that the Danish Radio and Television Board will make one DTT licence available for its four DTT multiplexes. The successful candidate will be selected following a “beauty” contest and the licence awarded by the end of March 2008.
One multiplex, already providing programming from public services broadcasters DR and TV2, is currently available and the remaining three multiplexes will become available after analogue switch-off on the 31st October 2009.
At present it is not known whether any future programming will be in HD or provide services to mobile handsets.

Danish mobile TV test concluded
DVB-H mobile TV tests in Copenhagen have been successfully concluded with users reporting that the sound and picture quality was extraordinarily good.
Company’s Viasat and TDC organised the trial, which involved 20 participants.
The participants found mobile TV to be a good way to keep up to date on news, sports and favourite TV series and a means to kill time on the bus or train.

DVB-H trial in Denmark
Viasat and TDC, Denmark’s leading telco, have launched a DVB-H mobile TV trial in Copenhagen. The tests will give both companies, who have previously participated in other international DVB-H trials, experience of this technology in the Danish market.
The tests, which have already started, will last until July 15th.
Participants will use Nokia handsets and be able to access DR1, TV2, TV2 News, TV3, TV3+ and MTV Music.
Transmissions will be broadcast from Lynetten and will cover most of the central area of Copenhagen where the participants in the tests live. Both indoor and outdoor coverage will be tested.

Telenor interested in Denmark DTT
Broadband TV News reports that Telenor Broadcast Holdings CEO, Stig Eide Sivertsen, has said that the Norwegian company would be interested in launching DTT services provided it could find a suitable partner.
Denmark currently has one DTT multiplex in service, for public broadcasters, but no further plans exist for further multiplexes for the commercial market.

Software Updates Over-the-Air
Digi TV has opened up a channel on its DTT system to allow manufacturers to run over-the-air software updates. The system uses the ETSI Specification for DVB-SSU and Digi TV requires that each software update go through an Interoperability Test before it can be transmitted.

Denmark has launched a website dedicated to Digital TV, which starts in Denmark on March 31st.
The main website is in Danish and an English version is under construction.

DTT to start in April 2006
Denmark is ready for the initial launch of DTT services using one multiplex in April 2006. This will be free-to-air and include services from DR, DR2 and TV2. Three additional multiplexes will also be launched later when frequency allocations are decided and it is expected that the entire Danish population will be able to receive all four multiplexes within 18 months.
Interactive services based on the MHP DVB standard will be used from the start of the new DTT programming.

Denmark announces analogue TV switch off date
The end of October 2009 has been set by the Government as the official date for analogue television switch off in Denmark, according to a press release dated 22nd June 2005.
Decisions regarding the use of spectrum (e.g. the amount used for TV or other services) will await the outcome of the ongoing international negotiations.

Danish consortium to test DVB-H
Public service broadcaster Danmarks Radio, Nokia Corp. and Motorola have formed a consortium to carry out pilot tests using the DVB-H standard to deliver video and data to mobile phones, according to the Danish Computerworld website.
The test will be coordinated by the Technical University of Denmark.
Nokia and Motorola will supply phones, telecom provider TDC the telephone services and Danmarks Radio the broadcast services.
The tests are planned to start in the Autumn of 2005.

Net Insight receives order from the national Danish TV network
Net Insight has been awarded a contract to bring digital TV signals from national and regional broadcasters, via optical fibre and microwave links, to transmitter stations all over Denmark. The contract awarded by Broadcast Services Denmark (BSD) is worth over SEK 10 million and uses the Net Insights Nimbra platform.
The network will enable the distribution of the signals required for the Danish digital terrestrial DVB-T network, which is currently being set-up.

Digital TV Transmitter order placed with NEC
On December 20th 2004 NEC Corporation announced the conclusion of the first contract in Denmark for the supply of Digital Terrestrial TV Transmitters to Broadcast Services Denmark. The order consists of 19 digital terrestrial transmitter systems ranging from 1.2kW to 7.5kW and equipped with the DM 3000 digital exciter.
The public broadcasters, Danish Corporation and TV2 Danmark will be the services providers for the new venture.
